About the role

The Teacher of Primary Maths is responsible for delivering high-quality online teaching and learning in Mathematics across Key Stages 1 and 2, helping pupils build secure foundations in numeracy, confidence and a positive attitude towards the subject.

The role requires strong knowledge of primary Mathematics, effective practice in teaching younger learners and the ability to develop mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, assessment and the wider school community while maintaining high professional and safeguarding standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver high-quality online Mathematics lessons for primary pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2.

  • Create engaging, differentiated learning experiences that meet pupils’ varying ages, abilities and learning needs.

  • Use practical resources, visual models, mathematical games and suitable digital tools to make concepts accessible.

  • Develop secure number sense, accurate calculation and confidence in using mathematical vocabulary.

  • Encourage pupils to explain their thinking, recognise patterns and apply Mathematics to everyday situations.

  • Curriculum Planning and Development

  • Contribute to the planning, review and development of the primary Mathematics curriculum.

  • Prepare coherent schemes of work, lesson plans and resources that build progressively on prior learning.

  • Ensure curriculum content and progression align with the English National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2.

  • Support appropriate links between Mathematics, other primary subjects and STEM activities.

  • Assessment and Progress

  • Use questioning, observation, practical tasks and short assessments to establish pupils’ understanding.

  • Assess and track progress in mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

  • Provide timely, constructive and age-appropriate feedback that helps pupils understand their next steps.

  • Use assessment information to identify misconceptions and plan targeted intervention or additional challenge.

  • Support preparation for relevant primary assessments, where applicable, while maintaining a broad Mathematics curriculum.

  • Classroom Management

  • Maintain a positive, safe and inclusive online classroom environment for primary pupils.

  • Promote positive behaviour and uphold school expectations consistently

  • Encourage pupil confidence, participation and engagement through clear routines and positive reinforcement.

  • Create a learning environment that supports academic and personal growth

  • Student Support and Wellbeing

  • Support pupils’ academic, personal and emotional development in an age-appropriate way.

  • Identify pupils requiring additional support, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, and contribute to intervention plans.

  • Promote pupil wellbeing, resilience and confidence, helping pupils overcome anxiety about Mathematics.

  • Maintain effective communication with parents and carers about progress and ways to support learning at home.

  • Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with the primary team, Mathematics colleagues and relevant school leaders.

  • Participate actively in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities

  • Share resources, teaching strategies, and best practice with colleagues

  • Support whole-school events and initiatives when required

  • Planning Expectations and Targets

  • Set appropriately challenging learning objectives based on pupils’ prior attainment, age, curriculum expectations and individual needs.

  • Plan lessons and sequences of learning in advance, showing how understanding will be assessed and how teaching will be adapted.

  • Select and prepare practical and digital resources, including guidance on any simple materials needed at home.

  • Work with primary colleagues to develop schemes of work, teaching methods and consistent approaches to mathematical vocabulary and calculation.

  • Monitoring and assessment

  • Use monitoring and assessment information to evaluate learning and plan pupils’ next steps.

  • Give frequent, constructive feedback on classwork and online homework in line with school assessment and marking policies.

  • Follow up incomplete work sensitively and communicate with parents or carers where younger pupils need support.

  • Provide support for pupils working below expectations and appropriate depth and challenge for pupils who grasp concepts quickly.

  • Record progress and achievements systematically and share clear updates through parents’ meetings and school reports.

  • Help pupils recognise their strengths and next steps through age-appropriate reflection and achievable learning targets.

  • Online Class Management

  • Establish a purposeful learning environment with clear routines so primary pupils feel secure and confident.

  • Set clear expectations for participation and behaviour in line with the school Code of Conduct, supporting increasing independence.

  • Deliver clearly structured lessons with short explanations, interactive activities and opportunities to practise and discuss ideas.

  • Promote active learning and gradually develop pupils’ ability to organise tasks and work independently.

  • Adapt teaching, pacing and resources to meet a range of learning needs.

  • Recognise and respond to pupils’ differing backgrounds, language needs and access to learning resources.

  • Manage lesson time effectively, balancing screen-based instruction with practical activities where appropriate.

  • Organise online teaching spaces and digital resources so younger pupils can access and use them safely.

  • Set manageable, age-appropriate homework that consolidates learning and provide clear instructions for pupils and parents.

Professional Development

  • Engage in ongoing professional learning and subject development

  • Stay informed about developments in primary Mathematics teaching and age-appropriate online learning.

  • Participate in appraisal and performance management processes

  • Contribute to continuous improvement within the department and school

Essential criteria

  • A recognised primary teaching qualification, such as a B.Ed, PGCE in Primary Education with a relevant bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.

  • Strong knowledge and experience of teaching Mathematics within the English National Curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2.

  • Secure understanding of progression in number, place value, calculation, fractions, measurement, geometry and statistics across the primary years.

  • Experience of developing pupils’ mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through practical activities, visual representations and clear explanations.

  • A desire to contribute to a thriving primary team and the development of primary Mathematics provision.

  • A proven track record of providing outstanding teaching and learning.

  • A willingness to take part in extra-curricular activities after school.

  • Experience teaching Mathematics to primary-aged pupils and adapting teaching to their developmental needs.

  • The ability to identify misconceptions, assess understanding and provide targeted support and appropriate challenge.

  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills, including the ability to engage younger learners online.

  • The ability to plan and deliver engaging, differentiated primary Mathematics lessons.

  • Experience monitoring, assessing and reporting on pupils’ progress effectively.

  • Strong organisational and time management skills

  • Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and pupil wellbeing.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of using digital assessment tools to monitor learning and plan interventions.

  • Experience of supporting primary pupils with English as an Additional Language.

  • Experience of using Microsoft Teams and Engage MIS.

  • Proficiency in computer literacy.

  • Experience of integrating technology into primary teaching in an age-appropriate way.

  • Previous international teaching experience.

  • Experience supporting statutory primary assessments or equivalent end-of-key-stage assessments, where applicable.

  • Knowledge of mastery approaches and the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract notation.

  • The ability to contribute to primary Mathematics enrichment, games and STEM activities.

  • Collaborative and proactive approach to teamwork

Qualifications
