About the role

The Teacher of English is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and learning across the English curriculum, inspiring students to develop strong literacy, communication, analytical, and creative thinking skills.

The role requires excellent subject knowledge, effective classroom practice, and the ability to support students in achieving academic success. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, examination preparation, and the wider school community while maintaining high professional and safeguarding standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver high-quality English Language and Literature lessons

  • Create engaging and differentiated learning experiences for students of varying abilities

  • Use a variety of teaching strategies and digital tools to support learning

  • Promote high standards of academic achievement and literacy development

  • Encourage analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication skills

  • Curriculum Planning and Development

  • Contribute to the planning, review, and development of the English curriculum

  • Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, and teaching resources

  • Ensure curriculum content aligns with examination board specifications

  • Support cross-curricular literacy initiatives where appropriate

  • Assessment and Examination Preparation

  • Prepare students effectively for GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent examinations

  • Assess and track student progress using a range of assessment methods

  • Provide regular and constructive feedback to students

  • Use assessment data to identify intervention and support needs

  • Support coursework, revision programmes, and examination preparation activities where applicable

  • Classroom Management

  • Maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment

  • Promote positive behaviour and uphold school expectations consistently

  • Encourage student confidence, participation, and engagement

  • Create a learning environment that supports academic and personal growth

  • Student Support and Wellbeing

  • Support students’ academic, personal, and emotional development

  • Identify students requiring additional support and contribute to intervention plans

  • Promote student wellbeing, resilience, and positive learning habits

  • Maintain effective communication with parents and guardians where required

  • Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the English department and across the school

  • Participate actively in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities

  • Share resources, teaching strategies, and best practice with colleagues

  • Support whole-school events and initiatives when required

  • Planning expectations and targets

  • Set challenging teaching and learning objectives based on knowledge of the students, their past/current achievement, the expected standards for students of the relevant ages, the range/content of work relevant to students.

  • Use these objectives to plan lessons and sequences of lessons in advance, showing how they will assess students’ learning, differentiating between students’ varying needs.

  • Select and prepare resources, including ICT, and plan for their safe and effective organisation.

  • Work with department colleagues to develop schemes of work, teaching methodologies and resources.

  • Monitoring and assessment

  • Use monitoring and assessment information to evaluate and extend students’ achievement.

  • Give frequent and constructive feedback to support students as they learn, following department policies on marking both classwork and online homework, and relating this to national standards where appropriate.

  • Manage students who fail to complete/hand-in work, according to school policies.

  • Identify and support more able students, those working below expectations or failing to achieve their potential, and those with emotional/behavioural/social difficulties.

  • Record students’ progress and achievements systematically, using this to help students review their own progress and inform parents of students’ achievement at Parents’ meetings, on grade cards and in Reports or references.

  • Discuss with students their views about their own progress and strengths/weakness, using subject performance profiles, so as to set targets for future improvement.

  • Online class management

  • A purposeful, disciplined learning environment, where students feel secure and confident.

  • High expectations of students’ academic behaviour, clear disciplinary structures following the Code of Conduct, and the promotion of self-control and independence.

  • Clearly structured lessons or sequences of work which interest and motivate students

  • Make learning objectives clear to students

  • Employ a variety of interactive teaching methods and collaborative groupwork.

  • Promote active and independent learning, that enables students to think for themselves and to plan/manage their own learning

  • Differentiated teaching where appropriate, to meet the needs of a variety of students.

  • An awareness of the varying needs of boys and girls, and those from different cultural/ethnic groups.

  • Effective organisation/management of teaching/learning time.

  • Efficient management of the physical teaching spaces, materials and resources.

  • Homework and other out-of-class work which consolidates and extends work done in class and encourages students to learn independently.

Professional Development

  • Engage in ongoing professional learning and subject development

  • Stay informed about developments in English education and teaching methodologies

  • Participate in appraisal and performance management processes

  • Contribute to continuous improvement within the department and school

Essential criteria

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification

  • Strong subject knowledge in English Language and Literature

  • Experience teaching English within secondary or equivalent education settings

  • Familiarity with GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent English curricula

  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills

  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons

  • Experience monitoring and assessing student progress effectively

  • Strong organisational and time management skills

  • Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and student wellbeing

Desirable criteria

  • Experience within international or online education settings

  • Familiarity with digital learning platforms and educational technology

  • Experience preparing students for external examinations

  • Passion for literature, language, and creative communication

  • Ability to contribute to extracurricular literacy or enrichment activities

  • Collaborative and proactive approach to teamwork

  • Passion for innovation and continuous improvement in education

Qualifications
