About the role
The Teacher of Computer Science is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and learning across the Computer Science curriculum, inspiring students to develop computational thinking, problem-solving abilities, and digital literacy skills.
The role requires strong subject knowledge, excellent classroom practice, and the ability to prepare students for academic success in Computer Science and related fields. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, innovation in digital learning, and the wider school community while maintaining high professional and safeguarding standards.
Key responsibilities
Planning, Teaching and Curriculum Development
Plan and deliver high-quality, engaging lessons aligned to the British curriculum
Set ambitious learning objectives informed by students’ prior attainment and target outcomes
Design sequences of lessons that develop programming, logical reasoning, debugging, and computational thinking
Balance theoretical knowledge with practical application
Differentiate effectively to meet the needs of all learners
Select and prepare high-quality resources, including coding tools and digital platforms
Contribute to the development of schemes of work, ensuring progression and academic rigour
Teaching and Learning
Plan and deliver high-quality Computer Science lessons
Create engaging and differentiated learning experiences for students of varying abilities
Use a variety of teaching strategies and digital tools to support learning
Promote high standards of academic achievement and digital literacy
Encourage computational thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills
Curriculum Planning and Development
Contribute to the planning, review, and development of the Computer Science curriculum
Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, and teaching resources
Ensure curriculum content aligns with examination board specifications and industry developments
Support cross-curricular and STEM-related initiatives where appropriate
Programming and Technical Skills Development
Teach programming concepts and coding skills using relevant programming languages
Support students in developing software development and computational thinking skills
Introduce students to emerging technologies and digital innovation where appropriate
Encourage practical application of technical knowledge through projects and activities
Assessment and Examination Preparation
Prepare students effectively for GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent examinations
Assess and track student progress using a range of assessment methods
Provide regular and constructive feedback to students
Use assessment data to identify intervention and support needs
Support coursework, programming projects, and revision programmes where applicable
Classroom Management
Maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
Promote positive behaviour and uphold school expectations consistently
Encourage student confidence, participation, and engagement
Ensure safe and responsible use of technology and online platforms
Student Support and Wellbeing
Support students’ academic, personal, and emotional development
Identify students requiring additional support and contribute to intervention plans
Promote responsible digital citizenship and online safety awareness
Maintain effective communication with parents and guardians where required
Collaboration and Teamwork
Work collaboratively with colleagues within the department and across the school
Participate actively in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities
Share resources, teaching strategies, and best practice with colleagues
Support whole-school events and initiatives when required
Assessment, Feedback and Student Progress
Use a range of assessment strategies to monitor and evaluate student progress
Provide clear, constructive feedback to improve coding skills, problem solving, and exam technique
Track and analyse performance data to support all learners and stretch high achievers
Prepare students effectively for external examinations
Support students in reflecting on progress and setting meaningful targets
Communicate progress effectively with parents
Online Classroom Practice
Establish a purposeful, disciplined, and engaging online learning environment
Maintain high expectations of behaviour and academic engagement
Deliver well-structured lessons that promote independence, problem solving, and creativity
Use varied teaching strategies, including live coding, collaborative tasks, and project-based learning
Encourage independent coding and debugging skills
Manage time and resources effectively
Set meaningful independent work that consolidates and extends learning
Professional Development
Engage in ongoing professional learning and subject development
Stay informed about developments in Computer Science education and emerging technologies
Participate in appraisal and performance management processes
Contribute to continuous improvement within the department and school
Essential criteria
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification
Strong subject knowledge in Computer Science and Information Technology
Experience teaching Computer Science within secondary or equivalent education settings
Familiarity with GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent Computer Science curricula
Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript
Excellent classroom management and communication skills
Ability to plan and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons
Experience monitoring and assessing student progress effectively
Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and student wellbeing
Desirable criteria
Experience within international or online education settings
Familiarity with AI, cybersecurity, data science, or emerging technologies
Experience using digital learning platforms and coding environments
Ability to contribute to extracurricular coding or STEM activities
Passion for innovation and technology in education
Collaborative and proactive approach to teamwork
Experience preparing students for technology-related competitions or projects
Qualifications
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification
Strong subject knowledge in Computer Science and Information Technology
